Every Traveller Needs a Permit, Including Children

If you are planning a Lakshadweep package tour from India, an entry permit is mandatory for every Indian and non-Indian traveller. This rule comes from way back in 1967, from the Restriction on Entry and Residence on areas like the Laccadive, Minicoy, and Amindivi Islands. Moreover, under the new 2026 permit rules, the Lakshadweep administration has clearly stated on its e-portal that anyone who is not a native must acquire a permit for entering and staying in Lakshadweep.

Do You Need a Permit?

Yes, every non-islander who is an Indian citizen, included under the Lakshadweep, Minicoy and Amindivi Islands (Restriction on Entry and Residence) Rules, 1967, needs to have an entry permit issued by the Lakshadweep Administration through its official ePermit system.

What Changed in May 2026

Many have questions like Do I need a police clearance certificate for Lakshadweep? Or just the entry permit? The answer is here: after Lakshadweep permits new rules in 2026, no local sponsor or police clearance certificate (PCC) is required, which is confirmed by the current official Lakshadweep administration ePermit portal.

Therefore, if any older Lakshadweep travel guides still tell you that you must arrange a local sponsor or submit a PCC, they are generally outdated.

However, the application is still subject to verification by the authorities, so removing the PCC requirement does not mean that applicants bypass verification.

Documents You Need

The main Lakshadweep permit documents required for Indian citizens are their official government photo ID and a recent photograph. However, the portal requirements can be updated; check the document list displayed on the official ePermit portal at the time you apply rather than relying on an older checklist.

How Long Does It Take?

By Air: Direct to Agatti (AGX)

Agatti airport (AGX) is the only airport in Lakshadweep which has commercial flight facilities. As of 2026, cities like Kochi, Bengaluru and Goa–Mopa are directly connected with Agatti. For most travellers, Kochi is still the main gateway to Lakshadweep.

Therefore, Kochi is the busiest connection in addition to Bengaluru, Kozhikode, and Goa–Mopa. The Kochi to Agatti flight takes roughly 1 hour 20 minutes. Bengaluru to Agatti is around 1 hour 55 minutes, while Mopa to Agatti takes about 2 hours, and Kozhikode to Agatti takes the most time, around 4 hours and 40 minutes to 5 hours and 40 minutes, due to one-stop or connecting flights via Kochi depending on the schedule and airline; others are direct flights with no stops.

• Agatti's Runway Limit: Agatti airport and runway have a limit of about 1,204 m, which is why it is served by regional smaller planes, and mostly no jets are allowed here. Currently, it uses turboprop aircraft such as the ATR 72.
• Tight Baggage Allowance: Regional flights have tighter baggage limits due to their smaller runway mentioned before. Reef Protection
